How Baton Rouge dog owners can learn more about participating in dog shows

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Dog show expert Carl Grotton talked about the history of the National Dog Show.

Grotton said the event started in 2003, based on the 2000 movie “Best in Show.” This year is the 25th anniversary of the movie’s premiere and 22 years since the National Dog Show began.

Each year, the event airs right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The Philadelphia-based dog show showcases dogs of different breeds, sizes, and personalities from all over the country. The event has also had Louisiana dogs participating.

For anyone interested in having their dog become a show dog, Grotton says to join a local kennel club and the American Kennel Club. Puppies can start training as early as three months, and they can start participating in shows at six months.

The Baton Rouge Kennel Club is hosting a Meet the Breeds event at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Goodwood Library. The public is invited to attend and learn about purebred dogs. Click here for more information about training your dog to be a show dog.
