For many dogs, going for a walk is the absolute highlight of their day. It’s a change of scenery, a chance to check out some new smells, and the opportunity to get all that pent-up energy out that’s been building up in their little bodies all day. If you find yourself working hard to convince your dog that the walk is over and it’s time to come inside, you’re definitely not alone!

But then, there’s this particular Golden Retriever, Oatmeal, with whom I feel a very deep kinship. He is not into the idea of going outside to take a walk because his cozy bed is much better, and honestly, who could blame him?

Oatmeal’s mom, @adriaandoatmeal, shared this footage on TikTok of what it’s like when she tries to talk him into going for a walk with her.

At first, he might as well be ignoring her—this dog is comfortable, and he is not about to move for just any reason.

Then, Mom pulls out the big guns, asking Oatmeal, “What if I give you a treat?” and waving the bag of treats in front of him.

That did the trick. As soon as he saw that bag, Oatmeal was on his feet and ready to go.

And you’ll be happy to know that the video ends on a very happy note, because even though he was reluctant to leave his cozy spot, once he was outside, he was having so much fun, including zoomies all over the yard.

In the comments, some fellow dog parents let Oatmeal’s mom know that they could relate to the struggle. “My dog runs away from me and will have me chase her all around the house. She hates walks, too,” one wrote.

Sometimes we just need that extra push to get us to do something that will be good for us—dogs included.
