In general, though, dogs of all ages chew for amusement, stimulation, and/or to calm anxiety.

When young, furry friends often chew on things to relieve puppy teething symptoms, satisfy curiosity while playing, and help burn off extra energy. As they age, a dog’s random chewing should lessen, but still happens, especially since it’s a natural activity that keeps its jaws strong and teeth clean. So, supplying them with appropriate treats and toys is essential. If it’s something that is happening more often than you’d like, it’s best to see a veterinarian, licensed dog trainer, or behavioralist for advice. Otherwise, just look at it as a good excuse to go out to the pet store and browse the toy aisle!

If you enjoyed this article, you’ll love the free Cuteness newsletter, which is full of practical tips and advice to help your pets live their best lives.
