He grew up in the Italian countryside, which meant that, in addition to the family cats and dogs running around his home, wild horses also dotted the landscape.

However, before he worked with elite racehorses and other equine athletes, Cavina spent time working on a preserve in the middle of Zimbabwe, where, alongside horses, he worked with lions and elephants on a private national park.

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden"/>

Bartolomeo Cavina and a lion.
Credit: Bartolomeo Cavina

There, the park aimed to reintroduce numbers of lions into other national parks around Africa. While he spent a decent amount of time in the stables of the preserve, he also spent time with more ferocious feline friends. A typical day working with lions meant an early morning wake-up, “walking” the lions around the park for a few hours, usually between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m.

“We were bringing the lions around the areas where they were enclosed or for smelling the air, letting them hunt a little, doing a lot of… They used to call it behavioral enrichment,” Cavina explains.

On the preserve, the lions would get a better feel for what it was like to be out in the wild and would learn how to hunt, as well as be respectful of humans, he shares. After the first walk, the lions would be fed, and sometimes Cavina and fellow volunteers would clean their enclosures.

“It was the same, walking through the savannah with this wild lions around,” he says. “And basically, it’s like if you bring your dog to the park, you were bringing lions into the savannah, same kind of preparation.”

Despite working with apex predators daily, Cavina says, he doesn’t have that fear that he finds is common between big animals and people. “That’s the problem,” he laughs.

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden"/>

Bartolomeo Cavina.
Credit: Bartolomeo Cavina

However, in case of emergencies, Bartolomeo shares that there is one item that he and fellow volunteers would use to stay safe while out on the savannah.

“It’s going to sound silly, I know, but it is the reality,” he says before laughing. “Just a stick,” he says.

“We were training them to be respectful of humans,” he tells PEOPLE.

Cavina says a light tap on the nose while working with lion cubs would suffice when things started to go south. He also explains that using sticks often created the illusion that the volunteers were quite tall, which would frighten lions acting out of hand.

“It wasn’t even needed, to be honest,” he adds.

Online, Cavina boasts over 50,000 followers for his videos, where he often depicts a day in the life working with elite racehorses and other athletic breeds as a veterinary physiotherapist.

“I’m the equivalent of the human physio, but for horses and dogs,” he says, describing his work. Though he works mostly with horses now, he occasionally works with other mammals, including dogs.

“Because I’m pursuing more career with top athletes, top athletes means good competitions. There aren’t any in the canine world,” he explains. “It’s more for equines, equestrians mostly.”

While working with horses, Cavina says his main goal is to “fix the horse to make him perform better.”

He starts by asking what might be stopping the horse from performing well.

“It can be sometimes the saddle, it can be a muscular problem that he had in the back caused by the saddle or either or a strain or a little injury that they got,” he says.

“I basically try to make the horse more comfortable with his body as possible and try to find the cause of it,” he says, adding that he treats the horses “manually” with soft tissue techniques and custom rehabilitation schedules.

“Every horse is different,” he adds, breaking down how he approaches treating each different horse. “You never know if one protocol is going to work or another one is going to work. So you just figure out the path that you have to follow with them, but it’s not exactly step A, step B, step C. It doesn’t work like that.”

Read the original article on People

NEED TO KNOW Bartolomeo Cavina works as a veterinary physiotherapist for elite racetrack and showjumping horses, but before that, he worked with lions in the middle of Zimbabwe While working on the preserve, Cavina would come into direct contact with the apex predators daily He tells PEOPLE that there was one unexpected item he and […]

[6
6904,11099,10233,10232,56,11098,1385,1429,751,763,2844,11096,1102,11089,3541,6861,11092,923,67,320,66,11101,3876,11088,11097,381,11094,11102,1433,11090,11100,11103,4602,4365,11093,2780,2627,47,1555,11091,1884,10468,319,582,486,3089,11095,4649
post-7907","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pets-news","tag-apex","tag-athletes","tag-bartolomeo","tag-cavina","tag-dogs","tag-elite","tag-exclusive","tag-explains","tag-horse","tag-horses","tag-lions","tag-lions-preserve","tag-man","tag-man-reveals","tag-middle","tag-object","tag-object-staff","tag-park","tag-pe-ts-fun","tag-people","tag-pets-news","tag-physiotherapist","tag-predators","tag-preserve","tag-preserve-exclusive","tag-protect","tag-protect-working","tag-racetrack","tag-reveals","tag-reveals-unexpected","tag-savannah","tag-showjumping","tag-spent","tag-staff","tag-staff-protect","tag-step","tag-tells","tag-time","tag-unexpected","tag-unexpected-object","tag-veterinary","tag-volunteers","tag-wild","tag-work","tag-worked","tag-working","tag-working-lions","tag-works
["GET
