When your dog disappears, there’s this really difficult moment where you have to make the impossible decision: do you keep searching, or do you give up and accept that they’re never coming back?<\/p>\n
For the Picardo family<\/strong> in San Jose, that question haunted them for nearly two and a half years. Their French Bulldog<\/a><\/strong>, Koko<\/strong>, disappeared in 2023 after their gardener accidentally left the backyard gate open. Koko and her companion, Gizmo<\/strong>\u2014both very\u00a0 much beloved family members\u2014just vanished into thin air.<\/p>\n What followed was textbook search protocol: police reports, neighborhood canvassing, flyers everywhere, constant shelter checks, microchips activated as missing. “Time just kept going on, and we kept checking, going to local shelters. We activated them as missing with their microchips,” the family told NBC<\/strong><\/a> Bay Area’s Marianne Favro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Then, scammers made the situation even worse, demanding $500 via Apple Pay and threatening to, “send your dogs to Nevada,” if they didn’t pay the ransom. Two years passed and the family’s 7-year-old daughter was completely devastated.<\/p>\n Zoe Maxine<\/strong>, a 23-year-old DJ from San Francisco, did somethine most would not have done. She’d actually bought a Frenchie<\/strong><\/a> off Craigslist for $500 over a year ago, in San Jose. She named her Mochi<\/strong>. But, when Zoe could no longer reach the sellers, she got suspicious and searched online. What happened next, no one could have expected. She found Koko’s photo and contacted the Picardos.<\/p>\n “She sent the picture of Koko. We just bawled our eyes out because we’re like, that’s her. I’m happy her owner gets to know she’s alive and well and is reunited with her.”<\/p>\n This reunion happened because of three things: a registered microchip, someone willing to check it, and someone with the integrity to make it right. Research shows<\/a> that dogs can find their way home using scent for shorter distances (up to 15 miles) and potentially, even Earth’s magnetic fields for longer journeys. But, French Bulldogs\u2014with their sweet flat faces and compact builds (those tiny little legs)\u2014aren’t built for long-distance travel like some larger breeds. When they’re lost or stolen, microchips become their only way to return home and that’s only if whoever finds them cares enough to do the work.<\/p>\n Koko’s story demonstrates exactly why activating a chip as “missing” and keeping registration current matters so much. It’s the difference between a dog lost forever and a family reunited.<\/p>\n The reunion happened last Sunday.
