The causes are often not apparent at first glance.

“Skin problems can often be an early indication of illnesses that can only be definitively diagnosed through laboratory tests,” says veterinarian Steffi Schmidt.

Conditions such as hypothyroidism or liver disease may first show up on the skin.

Allergies – triggered by pollen or certain foods – as well as parasites like fleas, ticks and mites are also common causes. These often lead to itching and redness.

Circular bald patches with heavy dandruff can point to a fungal infection, while frequent scratching may result in painful inflammation.

When to see the vet?

In principle, skin problems can affect all dogs. “However, dogs with pronounced skin folds, such as pugs, bulldogs or cocker spaniels, are particularly susceptible,” says Schmidt.

Moisture can accumulate in these folds, creating an ideal environment for bacteria.

Sudden changes in the skin, intense itching, or open and weeping sores should always be checked by a veterinarian without delay.

Prevention and care

Targeted grooming and care can help, especially for dogs with allergies or older animals prone to dry, flaky skin.

Special shampoos containing antibacterial agents like chlorhexidine or moisturising ingredients can reduce bacteria and support the skin’s natural barrier.

Regular observation and early action remain the most effective ways to keep your dog’s skin healthy.

A dog’s coat protects against cold, sun and injury, but the skin beneath is just as important — and can be a source of health problems.
