And then, in a moment that still feels surreal, his dog physically blocked the door, refusing to let him leave. That hesitation, just seconds, was enough. According to reports and translated interviews, Saito described the moment as a wake-up call. His dog didn’t understand human language, but he definitely understood something deeper. He sensed distress and intervened. This gave Saito something he didn’t have before: a second to pause. “I was saved by a dog,” he said. “So I’ll spend all my money to save dogs, ” and he meant it.

Saito completely dismantled his old life, shut down his business, and sold his Ferrari. That was the piece that really stood out to the public. Most people would keep that sort of money, or at least a part of it, but not Saito. All of the money funded a shelter. Located in Yaizu, in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture, the facility is called Wansfree. It’s not your typical rescue operation. It focuses on animals that most shelters turn away. Aggressive dogs, abused dogs, and animals with behavioral issues that make them harder to adopt and more likely to be euthanized. “I want to let them know that they are loved,” he says.

On top of that, Saito has also taken in cats, currently caring for over 40 dogs and 8 cats. He says it’s not easy work. He’s been bitten repeatedly, but he’s been open about it, saying the risk is part of the responsibility. His outlook on life has resonated with people around the world. “I am better off now than ever. I am so fortunate to be able to realize that,” Saito said. He’s not thinking small here either. His long-term goal is to expand Wansfree to house up to 300 dogs by 2028, a scale that would turn a personal mission into something much closer to a full-scale sanctuary.

Online, people have been sharing their own personal reflections

In a Reddit thread addressing the story, one commenter wrote, “Traded horsepower for heart power. absolute legend.” To many, it was more than a heartfelt story. Saito reminded us all of the true definition of “value.” Others took it somewhere more personal. “My doggie saved me on more than one occasion. Her love kept me alive,” one user shared, before adding that their dog had since passed. “I am looking for another vessel of love currently.” We start to see just how common this kind of bond actually is, even if people don’t talk about it out loud.

Another user had the same idea: “We don’t always save them; more often than not, they save us.” The exact sentiment that made Saito take drastic measures towards a rescue operation, and the exact thing millions of people can resonate with. There were also more grounded takes. One commenter pointed out, “Helping others (including animals) is another good way to fight depression.” It’s more practical than poetic, but just as important. Then there was a user who called Saito a “certified legend of humanity.” And we couldn’t agree more.

<dialog aria-label="Modal Dialog" aria-modal="true" class="fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-primary hidden"/>

A Japanese man with a dog

(Image credit: Facebook via CureJoy Inspirations)

If this makes you want to run out and adopt a dog, keep in mind there are a few things you should consider first. Dogs need consistent care, time, and attention every single day, not just when it’s convenient. You’ll need to factor in costs like food, vet visits, grooming, and training, along with your schedule and living space. Energy levels and temperament also vary widely between breeds, so finding a good match for your lifestyle matters. Taking the time to plan ahead helps ensure it’s a positive experience for both you and the dog.

Want more like this?
