It’s a trait caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation that was first documented in Montana in 1986. Selkirk Rex’s that have curly coats can even have curled whiskers!

Not all kittens in a litter will necessarily have curly coats. Those who do will have it until about 16 weeks of age, then the coat begins to straighten. At somewhere between 8-10 months old, the kitten will begin to regain the curls, and they will increase in their intensity until the cat is around 2 years of age, when the final coat becomes set.

Related: ‘Curly Cat’ Named Feta Has People Swooning All Over the Internet

“Selkirk rex cats have occasionally been called ‘the cat in sheep’s clothing.’ That’s because their dense, curly coats could almost be mistaken for wool, especially if they’re white or cream-colored.”

So, that’s why the second your brain is convinced you’re staring at a little lamb, you get hit with a tiny, adorable “meow” to confuse you even more.
