Dogs and other domestic pets can and do get cold. But how cold they get and when they get cold depends on the breed and size of the dog. Not surprisingly, one of the biggest indicators is the dog’s hair length and coat thickness. Dogs with shorter hair and thin coats—like boxers, greyhounds, and chihuahuas, for example—will get cold more easily. But dogs with thicker coats, like malamutes or huskies, will stay warmer in colder weather than other dogs.
Small dogs will also get colder more easily than larger dogs. And puppies and senior dogs tend to get colder more easily than middle-aged adult dogs. Some dogs can become uncomfortable at 45°F. If you have a puppy or a senior chihuahua, for example, you probably want to start protecting them from the cold once temperatures reach the 40s.
