Reptile sanctuary selling ‘foot paintings’ by Goose

In addition to his reputation as an escape artist, Goose, the water monitor lizard who led law enforcement and animal control officers on a wild chase through Webster and surrounding neighborhoods in July and August, is adding visual artist to his résumé.

Goose is taking a “paws” in his public appearances to dedicate some time to his artistic side. It started when the lizard made an appearance at the Gladys E. Kelly Public Library in Webster on Nov. 1.

“When he made his appearance at the Webster library, he did a few quick prints,” said Mack Ralbovsky, vice president of Rainforest Reptile Shows and a specialist in herpetology at the Rainforest Reptile Shows Oasis, the Beverly sanctuary for rescued reptiles.

Demand for the colorful “foot paintings” by Goose soared and the sanctuary decided to give Goose the job of doing more. They are being sold at $30 per footprint, with proceeds being used to support Goose and other creatures that live at the sanctuary.

Donations enabled the sanctuary to build a special enclosure for Goose that features tree trunks and high perches for climbing, a spot for the lizard to burrow and other elements that are common in his natural environment. Donations also support food, housing and veterinary services for all the animals at the sanctuary.

While Goose prints are a new addition to items available for purchase through the sanctuary’s website and Facebook page, the idea of animal artist is not new.

The sanctuary has also raised money with Goose-themed merchandise such as T-shirts and stickers.

The prints can be ordered through the sanctuary’s social media, its Facebook page and the website. They are being limited to preorders.

“We didn’t want to stress Goose in any way,” Ralbovsky said. However, the artist will accommodate special requests for fans who want a larger print.

“People can leave a comment on the Facebook page if they are interested, send us an email, or give us a call,” Ralbovsky said.
