If you’re a huge Golden Retriever fan, the following TikTok video just might make you fall even more in love with this incredible breed. Fred the English Cream Golden was well into his senior years when suddenly, at the age of 14, he figured out how to bark — and then he simply could not stop!

This is actually a throwback clip, as Fred’s mum revealed in the caption that he’s since crossed the Rainbow Bridge. However, she still gets so much joy out of watching old footage of him, and the moment he found his bark is certainly cherished.

“Here’s a bit of Fred to cheer you up on this rainy day. I’m in bed with a cold, so looking back at my old boy is putting a smile on my face 😀 Miss you, Fredster ❤️”

Get ready to cheer Fred on as he barks and barks like it’s his job.

Isn’t he just the best? It’s like the moment he figured out barking was an option, he decided to make daily announcements to just about anyone who would listen.

Viewers fell in love with this sweet guy, with a few noting, “Sounds like he’s shouting ‘help!'”

Another added, “My 13-year-old Staffy does the exact same! Never barked until we got his brother 2 years ago, and it’s all he does.”

Fred’s mum identified with this and replied with, “I think that was part of it. He saw that Rocco got his own way when he barked so he thought I’ll give it a go. 😂🤣❤️”

Why Do Some Dogs Not Bark?

As the parent of a feisty senior Shih-Tzu who barks like there’s no tomorrow, it’s funny to think there are some pups out there who remain quiet and calm all the time.

According to iHeartsDogs, there are a few reasons some dogs might rarely bark or not bark at all.

For starters, some dog breeds are just less prone to barking due to what they were initially bred for. The site notes that breeds known for being on the peaceful side include Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Italian Greyhounds, and Chinese Shar Peis.

Another reason pups stay quiet could just come down to their individual personality. While some dogs are sassy, spunky, and love to make themselves heard, others are the opposite.

The site explains, “They could be naturally shy and not want to draw attention to themselves, or they could be especially picky about how they exert their energy. If barking doesn’t seem worth the effort, they’ll choose to keep quiet.”

When you think about it, humans are very similar. Some of us are outspoken and love to be the talk of the town, while others are introverted and prefer to keep to themselves. To each their own!
