Pet Safety and Halloween Costumes

Not all pets enjoy, or even tolerate, getting dressed up. When it comes to Halloween costumes and pet safety, the most important thing to remember is that every animal is different. Let your pup decide whether dressing up is right for them. If they seem uncomfortable or show signs of stress or anxiety, it’s best to skip the costume altogether. Instead, try a Halloween-themed headband, bandana, or necklace so they can still show off their spirit, without dealing with a potential meltdown.

When picking out a Halloween costume for your dog, it should allow them to stretch and move about as they normally do without hindering their movement. They should also be able to walk, breathe, eat, drink water, bark, and go to the bathroom without help. If a costume restricts any of these basic activities, it’s a no-go.

If you have kids who are lugging home big bags of candy after trick-or-treating, make sure to keep the candy out of your dog’s reach. Help your children understand that dogs cannot have chocolate, as it is highly toxic because it contains theobromine and caffeine. Even a very small amount can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, seizures, or even death.
