When Her Roommate’s ‘Temporary’ Cat Became Permanent, Woman Says the Peace in Her Home Vanished

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman said her previously calm two-cat household fell apart after her roommate unexpectedly brought home a third cat

  • The new cat’s arrival left her own cat hiding, changed established routines and made her the default caregiver due to her roommate’s work schedule

  • Feeling guilty but overwhelmed, she turned to Reddit to ask if wanting to address the situation made her the bad guy

A woman turned to the Reddit community for advice following a tense shift in her living situation that revolved around cats, boundaries and an unexpected change at home.

“I had one cat originally, and then my roommate and I jointly adopted a second cat,” she wrote, noting that the arrangement worked well at first.

According to the woman, the two cats bonded quickly and created a peaceful environment she cherished. “All was well and those two cats got along great,” she recalled.

That harmony changed when her roommate brought home a third cat, OP explained, “now the whole vibe is off.” Though the situation was initially meant to be temporary, with the new cat staying for just “a couple days,” the feline had been living there for two weeks.

She shared that her own cat’s behavior shifted almost immediately after the new arrival. “My cat is basically hiding in my room all the time,” she wrote.

The bond between the two original cats also appeared to unravel under the new dynamic. “The two original cats aren’t cuddling anymore,” she added.

Meanwhile, the newest cat took over much of the shared space in the apartment. “This new cat is always in the common space, demanding attention and food,” she wrote.

The situation became more complicated due to her roommate’s work schedule. “Since my roommate works nights and comes home super late, I’m kind of stuck dealing with the cat’s needs,” she explained.

She also pointed out that basic responsibilities were becoming overwhelming. “The litter box situation is getting out of hand,” she added.

Despite her growing resentment, the woman admitted she felt conflicted.

“I feel guilty because I know my roommate’s cat needs a place, but at the same time, I’m super annoyed that my cat’s quality of life and our previous harmony is all messed up now,” she wrote.

“I just feel so bad because it’s not this cat’s fault,” she continued. “There’s just so many other situations at hand with my roommate it feels weird to talk about it.”

One commenter emphasized the lack of consent in the decision. “You’re frustrated because a major household change was made without real consent,” they wrote.

Another commenter echoed similar sentiments while acknowledging the complexity. “The issue isn’t the cat, it’s that the decision was made unilaterally,” the commenter explained.

Ultimately, many agreed the woman was not wrong for wanting change. “Wanting to do something about it doesn’t make you an AH,” the commenter added.
