Both of my dogs can be vocal at times. My senior Dachshund barks when she sees strangers, hears noises, or feels the need to scold her fur baby brother. That’s basically the extent of her using her voice. Then there’s my Pug mix, who opts for various styles of communication. Depending on the situation, he expresses himself with woofs, drawn-out whines, and occasional low growls.
While my canine cuties vocally make their feelings known, neither of them have ever ventured into howling or singing. Frank the Dachshund recently demonstrated this talent while trying to harmonize with a classic sitcom signature tune.
In the TikTok from @joyenewportbussen, the dapper Dachshund sat on someone’s lap at the dining room table and was in total performance mode. The theme song from The Andy Griffith Show could be heard in the background and Frank was doing his best to sing along.
He began with a full-blown howl, possibly to practice his scales. Frank then began barking in the hopes of finding the right key as the famous jingle played. The crooning canine belted out each note with spirit and put on an impressive show.
With the right agent and vocal training, Frank could have some tour dates in his future.
Dachshunds Are Howlers
This hunting breed is known to howl more than others. Doxies are more chatty than other dogs and often add barking, yelping and whining to their vocal repertoire. The frequency depends on the Dachshund’s individual personality and their environment.
There are several reasons why Dachshunds howl. Sometimes it’s their response to noises in their environment like a siren, doorbell, car horn or other dog barking. Separation anxiety can also be a cause since Doxies are closely bonded with their loved ones. Howling is how they express their nervousness when they’re away from their pet parents.

Your Dachshund may get more vocal when they’re bored or seeking attention. Howling is sure to get noticed and that interaction, even if it’s to be reprimanded, brings the result your dog may have wanted.
Frank has clearly had plenty of practice and shows no signs of staying silent anytime soon.
