Leave it to a dog to find yet another way to leave their humans on their toes. Whether they’re squeezing into the tightest possible space for a nap or zooming across the room like a racehorse, dogs have an endless number of tools in their belt to make life interesting. Even though dogs are creatures of habit who love their routines, they also make the most of every chance they get to have fun.
Just ask Carl! This German Shorthaired Pointer is a loyal and loving farm dog with energy to spare, which is why his family at @k80luckystables wasn’t entirely surprised when he stole a slice of pizza. When he began digging a hole to bury it ‘cheese size down,’ however, no one could believe their eyes!
What a greedy boy! Carl is on a serious mission to protect his treasure from wandering eyes, and honestly, he did a great job. Merely seconds after he started digging the hole, the pizza was completely hidden!
“This is how pizza trees happen,” warned commenter @noah_young220. That would be Carl’s dream come true! The more likely outcome is just a dirty piece of pizza, but to this hungry dog, that’s just as great an outcome.

If you think about it, it takes way more restraint to bury the pizza instead of eating it then and there! Carl is playing the long game by digging a hole to store his snack in, which shows just how smart this German Shorthaired Pointer really is.
@Thebucketeer knows this is a dog’s “idea of ‘putting food in the fridge,'” but one question still remains: did Carl come back to feast on his delectible snack? We may never know!
Why Do Dogs Dig?
As Carl demonstrated, many dogs dig holes to hide food, bones, toys, and other treasures. This is an ancient instinct passed down by their wolf ancestors, though today it’s less about survival and more about fun and fulfilment.
“My boy would do this,” another commenter shared, “and if I spoke to him during, and he recognized I saw his spot, he’d get it back out and find a new spot.” Dogs can be so smart, and so rambunctious!
Dogs can also dig holes for fun, out of boredom, or even to get somewhere. Two next-door neighbor pups even dug a hole beneath the fence so they could say hi! There are many reasons why dogs might dig, but few are as entertaining as burying an entire slice of pizza.
