Behind-The-Scenes Peek at Westminster Dog Show Proves Show Dogs Are as Goofy as Any Other Pet

From January 31 to February 3, thousands of the world’s top show dogs gathered in New York City for the 150th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. In the end, only one dog could bring home the coveted ‘Best in Show title,’ but every dog in the building was a winner in their handler’s eyes.

Show dogs may be the picture of grace and beauty, but when they’re not in front of the judge, they’re just like any other dogs. One lucky dog mom learned this firsthand when she attended the dog show and saw the canine contestants living their very best lives. From playing and exploring to cuddling and napping, these goofy dogs do it all while they wait for their turn in the spotlight!

What good boys and girls! Dog show broadcasts focus on each dog breed while theyre judged, but there’s rarely another camera catching adorable behind-the-scenes moments like this. Fortunately, this lucky dog mom knew exactly what everyone wanted to see!

“I don’t know why I always assumed it was super serious and the dogs had to be still or lose points,” admitted @ashumisprime. That’s a common misconception, especially because the ‘serious’ parts of the dog show are what we see on TV and social media. In reality, show dogs have potty breaks, lots of snacks, and plenty of time to relax and play.

As another commenter shared, they spend their non-show days just like any other dog would. @Staymonkey said, “I used to walk a Bull Terrier show dog! Coming here to promise everyone those dogs live totally normal lives outside of showtime! They’re just babies.”

Watching the Italian Greyhound making eye contact with the camera could make anyone smile, but the English Bulldog and his portable fan nearly made me swoon. This little dog is so loved!

2026 Westminster Dog Show

All of the dogs in this video looked happy and loved, and I know I’m not the only one wishing they could all take home awards. Only one Best in Show ribbon can be awarded, and this year, the winner was an elegant Doberman Pinscher named Penny.

This year’s Best in Show group was a diverse lineup of truly stunning dogs, from an Afghan Hound whose fur flowed in the wind to a pampered Maltese who knew they’re made of royalty. There really is something for everyone to see at a dog show as prestigious as Westminster, from majestic struts to goofy shenanigans.
