A pet who goes missing is a real nightmare, especially for those solely designated as inside companions. Sometimes, no matter how many precautions we take to keep them safe, their intelligence and curiosity get the best of them. It could truly happen to anyone.
Recently, a devoted Labrador Retriever escaped her fenced yard in an attempt to follow her 93-year-old dad to the store. Missing for two weeks, it took the work of caring individuals and a very special pair of socks to finally capture Sunny and bring her home. This is one of those stories that’ll remind you how much our pets love us.

Thanks to @abcnews for sharing this feel-good clip, we get a glimpse of what went through sweet Sunny’s little doggy mind when she escaped, as well as the emotional toll it took on her dad, Norm. Take a look at this rollercoaster of a ride!
To recap: Dad went to the grocery store, and Sunny felt like she should’ve been invited, so she did what any loyal pup would do and followed him! Only, she never made it to the store and ended up lost, wandering the great big world alone.
With the help of volunteers who spread the word about the Labrador, Sunny was spotted after two weeks, and the trap was set. The only lure this smart girl would go for was none other than Norm’s “stinky” socks inside the trap—and it worked!
Shortly after, the two reunited, and all of our hearts are collectively thumping with joy over this happy ending!

“The house was barren without her,” one person echoed Norm’s heartfelt words. “Who knew stinky socks would bring them together!” another added.
Another person shared what we’re all feeling, writing, “What a heartwarming story! It’s amazing how something as simple as a pair of socks can lead to such a beautiful reunion. The bond between this man and his dog is truly touching.”
This reunion between Sunny and Norm reminds me of another involving a Golden Retriever who hadn’t seen her wheelchair-bound grandpa in a long time. Watch how she remembers him almost immediately (and try not to cry).
Dogs Remember Us Through Feelings
A dog’s memory of their people is more complex than how we hold memories. While we can think of one particular moment that’s ingrained, theirs is associative. That means something like the smell of Norm’s socks will trigger those feel-good feelings, so Sunny would recall how happy she felt being with him.
Once it all clicked, Sunny’s “memories” of Dad likely flooded in with every good emotion she associates with him. They’re literally feeling their memories, which is just so beautiful.
Here’s hoping their special bond lasts for the rest of their days, stinky socks and all!
