Dogs are naturally empathic and have a strong affinity for caretaking. Canines always seem to know when we’re feeling sad, under the weather, or stressed out. Dogs can also sense vulnerability, especially in babies, puppies, and kittens.

This sweet Golden Retriever is a perfect example of a canine showing a protective side for little ones.

In the TikTok from @blondshavemorefun865, the video opened with three Pug puppies asleep in a makeshift crib. The camera slowly panned over to a Golden Retriever lying down directly across from the pups with her eyes fixed on the fur babies.

“My Golden Retriever watching over ‘her’ Pug foster puppies while they sleep,” the onscreen text explained of the tender scene.

The gorgeous Golden didn’t move a muscle during the puppies’ nap time, clearly dedicated to serving as their surrogate mom. She was obviously committed to keeping them safe.

The three little Pugs huddled together in an adorable puppy mound, sleeping like babies. Two of the puppies were on their backs with their paws straight up in the air, while the third pooch was sandwiched in the middle on her side. They were all out like a light, enjoying a solid afternoon nap.

Followers found the caring canine and puppy trio absolutely irresistible.

“The pup with his arms up… This video made my day!” one raved.

“Oh my goodness. Too cute,” another remarked.

“Oh, puppy bellies!” someone pointed out.

Dogs Can Show a Maternal Side

Some canines have a strong maternal instinct toward weaker or younger animals. This is most common in older female dogs. They show this protective nature by watching over a new puppy or kitten, and following them around to make sure they’re safe.

These self-appointed “nanny” dogs often share their toys and cuddle with them throughout the day to keep them warm.

According to the caption, these Pug pups are just 3 weeks old. This Golden Retriever doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to give up her protective post.
