A sweet video from Instagram user @brunothedeafdog features Bruno, a deaf rescue dog, who loves to walk — and his owner has a secret sign to let him know when they are going for a stroll. In the video, the fur baby sits on a bed while his owner stands before him, ready to make the dog’s day better. Meanwhile, the on-screen text adds context with, “How we tell our deaf rescue dog we’re going on a walk.”
Deaf dog knows when it’s time to go for a walk by what owner does
The owner starts the routine by slowly lifting one hand, with his palm facing up. In the adorable video by @brunothedeafdog, the deaf rescue pooch immediately picks up on the cue, getting visibly excited as he crawls closer to his owner. Then, Bruno’s human brings up his other hand, points two fingers down, and mimics a walking motion across his open palm — and that is all it takes for him to completely lose it.
The rescue fur baby bumps his nose against his human’s hands, his tail wagging out of control. Later, the owner repeats the gesture on the floor, and Bruno matches the energy, barking loudly as he leads the way out of the room. His human wrote in the video’s caption, “He locks in every time that hand signal starts!”
This training method works so well because it taps into a dog’s natural talent for reading body language, and since canines already communicate easily through physical cues, teaching a deaf dog custom hand signs helps swap out the high-pitched baby talk other dogs listen to. And judging by the video, this deaf dog clearly understands the visual translation.
Meanwhile, viewers flooded the comment section to share their love for the duo’s exchange. One person pointed out the translation, writing, “Is this the deaf equivalent of: you waaannaaa goooo….,” while another user called it the “Sign language version of ‘do you……. Wanna……. Go for a……………… WALKIES?!’” Moreover, one viewer noted, “Deaf but barks full volume lol love it.” As of writing, the video has garnered 66.3K likes.
Bruno might not hear anything, but his happy barks prove he knows what to do next.
