Austin dog recovering from severe rattlesnake bites

Animal advocates with Austin Pets Alive! say they’re caring for a dog who was bitten by a rattlesnake on Thursday.

APA! says Neville, the 2-and-a-half-year-old Boston terrier, was bitten twice by the snake – once on the tongue and again near his eye.

Neville’s family dropped him off in critical condition. APA! said his face was so swollen the medical team couldn’t even locate the puncture wounds.

“When his family learned what saving him would require, they made the most heartbreaking kind of love-based decision: to either humanely euthanize the pup or surrender him to their veterinarian,” APA! said in a release. “After he was surrendered to the vet clinic, the clinic reached out to APA! asking if the nonprofit could take him.”

APA! veterinarians gave him antivenom, IV fluids, pain medications and antibiotics.

In an update on Friday, vets said the swelling had gone down and Neville’s eye is improving. He’s resting comfortably but will need another one to two weeks of care.

APA! said spring and early summer mark the height of rattlesnake activity in Central Texas, and pets are at risk any time they’re outdoors.
