Sometimes, an animal sighting is so bizarre that all people can do is scratch their heads and wonder about what is going on. In a recent video filmed in a café, a small group of meerkats was spotted huddling together under a tiny lamp.
What were they doing in this Café? We are not entirely sure, but it looks like they were trying to have a secret meeting. Naturally, the Internet had lots of theories about what might be going on here. Some were cute and funny. However, there is one theory that stood out for being rather disturbing.
In the footage, four meerkats appeared to be huddling together, as though they were sharing secrets or trying to have a clandestine meeting in a café. Human voices can be heard in the background speaking what sounds like an Eastern European language, possibly Russian.
As soon as these little meerkats hear this human chitter chatter, they stop and turn in the direction of the voices, as though they had just been caught doing something they are not supposed to be doing.
Theories on social media ranged from these meerkats “performing a ritual or something” to “telling secrets” and “summoning the ancient spirits.”

However, one viewer posited the disturbing theory that while this video looks cute on the surface, it is actually evidence of something very sinister: animal trafficking.
As one viewer noted: “They’re adorable, but this is horrible. This is what animal trafficking looks like. Meerkats live in large, complex social groups in AFRICA. If you see them in a café like this or a pet shop, it means they’ve been stolen from their family and shipped to foreign countries. Many die along the way.”

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, animal or wildlife trafficking is one of the direst issues currently harming the natural world. Interpol estimates that this illegal industry generates an estimated $20 billion a year, while doing irreparable harm to wild animals and the Earth’s delicate biodiversity.
These crimes involve the illegal trade, smuggling, poaching, capture, sale, or collection of legally protected animal species. One way to fight against wildlife trafficking is to be aware of local, national, and international laws that protect wildlife.
That means that not all exotic pets are legal or ethical to have at home. It’s also good to avoid supporting institutions that either import or export trafficked wildlife and to push for new laws to prevent the trade of vulnerable animal species.
