If you’re ever in need of inspiration, look no further than all the amazing dogs of the world who’ve overcome obstacles with light, positivity, and a whole lot of love.
One of these incredible pups isn’t disabled—he’s differently abled, and makes the paralyzed life on wheels look effortless. The Treeing Walker Coonhound named Lieutenant Dan not only serves as the best big brother to foster dogs in need, but this Hero Dog Awards finalist’s infectious joy and hopeful spirit will leave you feeling like you can do hard things, too.

This two-legged therapy dog from New Richmond has earned his spot as an America’s Top 5 Hero Dog Awards finalist by the American Humane Society, and once you hear his story, you’ll understand why.
Born the runt of the litter with severely deformed back legs and tail, Lieutenant Dan had surgery at 6 months old and got right back to running the very next day! He learned to walk on his two front legs—and eventually got his wheelchair—determined to move forward no matter the challenge.
The certified therapy pup spends his time bringing smiles to everyone he meets, and there’s no denying how much joy he radiates—he truly is a gift. As one of the Hero Dog Award finalists, Lieutenant Dan is showing the world how to embrace their differences.
Mom, Laura Person, says he “lights up our lives every single day,” and that much is clear through his Instagram account via @lieutenant_dan_the_twc. The 7-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound is all smiles and personality, who no one could possibly resist.

Lieutenant Dan Is the Best Foster Brother
At home, Lieutenant Dan lives an adventurous life with Mom, Dad, and a pack of fur siblings, including fosters who are sometimes special needs, too. He helps them build confidence and courage, leading by example, and I’m not crying—you’re crying!
Mom noted Dad has “helped socialize and promote five paralyzed foster dogs for adoption—showing others that every dog deserves the chance to live a happy, full life.”
When he’s not doing all these incredible things, Lieutenant Dan loves camping trips, hiking trails, and even paddleboarding. He also competes in special games and scent work, proving there’s nothing special-needs pups can’t do if they believe in themselves.
When your superpowers are “infectious joy, lighting up a room full of strangers, or inspiring people with disabilities who see themselves in his joyful perseverance,” you deserve people to stop and take notice.
The Hero Dog of the Year announcement happens on November 7, and Lieutenant Dan and Mom will walk the red carpet in hopes of snagging the win. There are four other equally amazing pups up for the prize, but all five of these dogs are winners to us!
