According to the American Kennel Club, the average lifespan for most dogs falls between 10 and 13 years, depending on size and breed. Smaller dogs tend to live longer, sometimes reaching their mid to late teens.
There are exceptions. The oldest recorded dog, Bobi, reportedly lived past 30 years, though cases like that are extraordinary.
Remy, a border collie-Jack Russell mix, sits far outside the norm.
What Aging Looks Like When You’re Paying Attention
The Reddit post doesn’t show a dramatic before and after. It shows something more honest.
Remy still looks for his person. Still rests nearby. Still plays with a ball. Still responds—just on his own timeline now.
Aging in dogs isn’t just physical. Cognitive changes can appear too. According to veterinary research, many senior dogs develop a form of cognitive decline similar to dementia, affecting sleep, memory and behavior.
But they don’t stop being themselves.
