And then there’s Duke, a senior Golden Retriever who apparently looked at a full box of green beans and thought, yes, these belong in my bed now.
In the video, Duke walks into the room carrying the entire box, like he has just completed a very important grocery run and would now like a moment of privacy to enjoy his success. It’s such a ridiculous and wonderful image that you almost forget how casually he’s doing it. No shame. No sneaking. Just one older Golden proudly hauling produce to his personal quarters like this is a perfectly normal household event.
And honestly, with Duke, maybe it is.
Because that is what makes the whole thing even better. This isn’t a one-time act of vegetable crime. He has lots of videos of himself bringing random things in to show Mom, which means Duke is not just a green bean thief. He’s a collector. A curator. A dog with a rich inner life and apparently very specific taste in presentation.
That’s why this clip works so well. It’s not just funny because he stole something unexpected. It’s funny because he has such confidence about it. Duke doesn’t look like a dog making bad choices. He looks like a man with a system.
And that is a very Golden Retriever thing, somehow.
They can do the dumbest, sweetest, most confusing thing imaginable and still make it look wholesome. Duke carrying an entire box of green beans to his bed feels less like mischief and more like a lifestyle decision. He’s not here to explain himself, and frankly, he shouldn’t have to.
Senior dogs also just have a special kind of comedy to them. They don’t rush. They don’t overcomplicate. They simply see something they want, commit to it, and carry it off with the energy of someone who has earned the right to be a little eccentric.
Duke absolutely has that energy.
Let Older Dogs Keep Their Quirks
One of the best things about senior dogs is that they usually know exactly what they like, and little habits like carrying objects around can be part comfort, part play, and part personality. As long as what they are grabbing is safe, those odd little routines can actually be a nice form of enrichment. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center notes that senior dogs still benefit from activities that engage their minds, including simple games, food-related enrichment, and familiar routines.
Honestly, Duke carried those green beans to bed like he was meal prepping for a retirement community potluck.
