The first scrambled dog was born in Columbus. Vote for the restaurant with the best one

According to hometown lore, the scrambled dog was born right here in Columbus, Georgia, and there are as many ways to eat one as there are places to find a good one.

Now it’s up to you guys to declare a winner for Columbus’ Best Scrambled Dog.

The history of the scrambled dog

The very first scrambled dog was invented by Firm Roberts, restaurateur and hot dog grandfather, and we have him to thank for this delightful treat. Historic Columbus told his story in a History Spotlight last year.

Roberts told the (then) Columbus Enquirer-Sun the story of his invention, the scrambled dog, and how he used them to greet Fort Benning’s first Army men at a stand just outside the base.

The first scrambled dog, ever, was served in this roadside stand for returning Army soldiers.

His roadside stand was situated in “a beautiful oak grove on Cusseta Road just southeast of the Bull Creek bridge and not far from where Fort Benning Road turns off the main highway.”

By 1947 he had sold more than 100,000 scrambled dogs.

The many ways to enjoy a hot dog

At its core, a scrambled dog has to have a wiener, bun, chili and onions, but there are many ways to eat it.

Some folks like onions and pickles, some prefer oyster crackers, but my scrambled dog-must is coleslaw … under the chili, of course.

Dinglewood Pharmacy is, historically, the most famous hot dog joint, with its pink weenies and signature chili blend. But there are a lot of places that are giving it a run for its money.

Whether you’re into experimenting with new toppings, want to enjoy your dog street-style or need it on the go, Columbus has you covered.
