Parrot Who Sings His Own Original Songs Totally Deserves a Grammy

All types of different pets are awesome for different reasons, but I will admit that parrots have the edge when it comes to their unique methods of communication. After all, dogs can learn tricks and play fetch, but can they learn to speak human language that will inevitably crack you up every single time you hear it?

When it comes to speech, some parrots are way ahead of the curve, like Brody in the video below. He’s not just singing songs — he’s writing them, too.

In this video shared by @brody.and.the.flo on TikTok, we can hear Brody singing his heart out… and it’s not a song you’ve ever heard before, because it’s one that this brilliant bird has managed to come up with all on his own.

Does it make much sense? No, but in my opinion, it doesn’t have to when it sounds this cute!

Though some of Brody’s song is just made up of sounds, he does throw a few real lines in there, like “don’t feel bad,” and it’s clear that he has a solid set of pipes!

“He was an opera singer in a past life,” one commenter wrote on the video, and I have to agree. This talent didn’t just come out of thin air!

Do Parrots Know What They’re Saying (or Singing?)

We know that we can teach parrots words and phrases because they are excellent at mimicking humans. But when they do that, do they actually understand what they’re saying — or in Brody’s case, singing?

According to Live Science, birds actually can learn speech, though whether or not they actually do learn it or just stick to mimicry is up to the individual bird, but it will also take a bit of effort on their human’s part to help them make that connection.

“If you say ‘peanut’ enough times and you hand them a peanut, just like with a kid, they’re going to learn that word label,” psychology professor Erin Colbert-White told the outlet, adding. “Sometimes they’ll use these words or phrases in appropriate ways, because they’re smart.”

Birds are able to use the phrases and words they pick up in context; for example, they’ll catch on that “hello” is a greeting or that “uh oh” is a word you say when you drop something.

Songwriting, though? That might be a special Brody talent. He deserves all the Grammys for that!
