I had the absolute privilege of spending 11 years getting to know a Bernese mountain dog. I learned so much about Huxley the Berner over those years. Things like how absolutely goofy and loving Berners can be. How needy and attached they can be—especially watching him live through the pandemic when he stopped getting left alone during the day while people went to the office. And also how absolutely gentle and kind they are to babies, children, and senior citizens.

I also learned that there are two things they love a ton. One is that they love cold weather, and especially snow. And they love being around their person or core group. This is captured perfectly in a recent TikTok video we came across. The TikTok video is only 11 seconds long and features Franklin, the Bernese mountain dog (aka @yournewfriendfranklin), and perfectly captures the essence of a Berner.

Franklin the Berner Loves the Snow

The caption on the side of the video above the comments section reads, “He said, ‘let’s play!'” And the video starts with Franklin’s human parent opening a front door, with Franklin standing directly outside, nose almost pressed against it, with a ton of snowflakes in his hair. The caption on the video reads, “Trying to get Franklin inside during the snow…”

Franklin comes in the door, immediately does a circle, and stops while his human parent, holding the camera, steps outside. Franklin stands inside for a second, staring, and then does the classic Berner move of running all of a sudden, with pure excitement, and slips and almost goes down before getting out the door and jumping up on his human parent with pure excitement and joy. And the video ends with a hilarious shot of Franklin just mauling his human parent with love.

There are some excellent comments on the TikTok video. “Franklin did NOT want to shake off outside,” National Geographic Animals’ official TikTok account commented. “OMG IT’S HAPPENING THE HUMAN IS COMING OUTSIDE TO PLAY,” added TikTok user @boogyyman1, fully encapsulating Franklin’s pure joy and excitement with the all-caps comment. “Franklin said, FINALLY GOT HER OUTSIDE,” commented TikTok user @S’mores, which looked to be another Bernese mountain dog account.
