GHENT, WV (WVNS) – The Pokémon franchise has a myriad of cute creatures that players can take with them on their adventures, but it also has many NPCs that have a pokémon companion just as a pet. Not all of these creatures would make a fantastic living companion, however. Some, like slugma, could cause significant property damage and bodily harm if you had one for a pet. So, with this in mind, which pokémon would be the best pets? Let’s take a look at some of the best in no particular order.
Meowth
Meowth is popular – especially because of the anime, but let’s talk about Meowth from the games, specifically Kanto’s meowth. If you read its pokedex entries there really isn’t too much that’s alarming about meowth. It’s a bit fickle and likes shiny objects but really that’s just normal cat behavior. When you consider you could make bank off of meowth because it can learn pay day, any bad attributes start to become a little less jarring. That said, you definitely shouldn’t evolve it if it’s just a pet because Persian’s dex entry for crystal notes that it will lash out for no reason and you probably don’t want a 70 pound cat that is essentially a panther lashing out at you.

Growlithe
Who doesn’t love a puppy? No one! And Growlithe being the puppy-pokemon means that it’d be a great pet! Most of its dex entries talk about its loyalty, making it a great pet to have. In Pokemon Stadium 2 when Pokemon Blue, Gold, or Yellow are inserted, the dex entry says that it is “extremely loyal” and will “fearlessly bark at any opponent to protect its own trainer from harm.” With that in mind, imagine how well you or your family would be protected by this little fire pup!
Chansey
Chansey is what we all imagine when we think of the Pokémon game healthcare system. She’s a kind pokémon according to many of her dex entries and even better – she lays eggs that get more delicious the more she’s loved. You could have the best scrambled eggs every day of your life with Chansey as a pet! It is also said in dex entries that Chansey is said to bring happiness to whomever catches it.
Meganium
Okay so Meganium may not be everyone’s first pick but hear me out. She can calm and sooth feelings with the aroma from her petals and anyone who stands next to it becomes refreshed according to some of its dex entries. Meganium would make an excellent service pokémon because of this. She can also revive all your dead houseplants you forgot to water so that’s another huge plus!
Plusle or Minun
Do you sometimes wish you had a cheerleader in your life for when you’re making hard choices? Well, do we have the pokémon for you. Plusle and Minun are literally cheerleader pokemon. Its dex entries say that it’ll use its sparks to make pom-poms to cheer on friends. There’s also a small bit about how it drains power from telephone poles, but, hey, who uses a landline anymore, right?
Swablu
Swablu is cute, fluffy, and the best part – it’ll clean your house for you. The Sapphire entry for Swablu says that it loves to make things clean. You know what that means? No more doing dishes for you if you have a pet swablu! Also if you were to evolve your pet swablu into an altaria, you’d get to enjoy its singing voice which the dex describes as “gorgeous.”
What to know ahead of the Monster Hunter Stories 3 release
Syleveon
Face it – you wanted an eeveelution on this list, didn’t you. It’s okay – we all did. Pokémon fans love the eeveelutions and guess what? Your sylveon loves you too! No, really. It evolves due to high affection and knowing a fairy type move. Also, like Meganium, it releases a chemical from its feelers to calm those around it. Also, according to its Ultra Moon dex entry, it’ll walk arm in arm with you and sense your feelings.
Alcremie
Alcremie would be a great pet because, like others on this list, it just kind of magically makes you happy. It can create a sweet, whipped cream that when ingested makes the person who ate it happy. It’s also exceedingly cute and there’s a ton of variants of it so it’s unlikely you’d have the same version one as someone else.
Those are just a few pokémon that would make a good pet. Some people also provided their opinion on which would be the best to 59News.
59New’s evening anchor Rivers Upchurch said he’d like to have a dragonite as a pet. “He’s my favorite,” Upchurch matter-of-factly provided despite conversation about the property damage a dragon could cause.
Having a very different take, Jaclyn LaPine stated, “I’d love to have a fletchling! They are cute, small, and would be easy to care for, but also they can evolve into a strong pokémon. Fletchling would also be the best s’mores making buddy!”
When Heidi Cork was asked about which she would have she stated, “Probably flareon. I have always had an affinity for fire types, but I also love how adorable and cuddly eevee is. Flareon would be an amazing cuddler, especially in the winter. It normally has high attack power and that is generally how I do all of my battles so training it would be fairly easy.”
Roxanne Reed stated, “Gosh, it’s hard to choose between Snorlax and Eevee for me! Snorlax has always been my favorite because he just seems so peaceful and I want to crawl up on his belly and take naps with him! He’d also make me feel safe because he’s so large and strong. However, eevee is like a fox, rabbit, and cat thing all in one and would probably fit in my house a lot easier. I could take an eevee in public without causing a scene and eevee would also make me feel safe because I know they can protect me with quick attacks and growls. Eevee could sleep in bed with me and I could pick them out a cute harnesses to wear. Eevee also seems less dangerous than some pokémon, so I won’t have a fear of being electrocuted or set on fire. In a dream world where I had a giant house to fit snorlax, I’d choose him, but Eevee is more realistic for my housing situation.”
What pokémon do you think should have made the list and which ones are your favorites? Personally, I would want Grafaiai despite the gremlin behavior, the chaos it would cause painting everything, and the poison issue.
