Move over, Ace Ventura, there’s a new pet detective on the scene!
In a heartwarming Fox29 Philadelphia segment on TikTok, we learn about Benji, the Bernedoodle, who became a social media star after escaping from his Philadelphia home during one of the biggest snowstorms the city has seen in years. His running away led to a citywide search and his safe return after 48 hours.
But the real star was drone operator Rick Rotondo, who eventually located Benji in a vacant lot and helped reunite the adorable pooch with his grateful pet parents!
What an incredible story! It not only has a happy ending, but it also sheds some light on real-life pet detective work!
After watching this segment, I’m sure there are lots of people who are re-evaluating their careers and considering a switch to pet detective!
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think this was a real industry, but after watching this clip and seeing the reaction from viewers on TikTok, I’m tempted to get my pet detective certification! (If there is such a thing!)

“So glad he was found safe!!!!” noted a fan.
“I saw this on Facebook. I’m sobbing,” added another person. “I’m so happy he’s home.”
“Lord, dogs don’t know what they put us through when they run away,” said another viewer.
Amen!

Thank goodness Benji and his pet parents were reunited!
Of course, Benji now takes walks with a heavy-duty leash, the baby gates at home are up, and a GPS tracking device is on order!
Why Do Dogs Run Away?
It sure seems like Benji has a nice setup at home with a comfortable house and loving parents. So, why on earth would he run away?

Dogs might run away out of instinct, fear, boredom, or curiosity, often driven by a need for stimulation or a desire to roam.
With that, I’m thankful that Benji has been reunited with his pet parents! I’m also happy to know that there are pet detectives like Rick Rotondo out there willing to save the day!
