Chula Vista is hosting two free vaccine clinics this month for cats and dogs owned by residents of Chula Vista, Lemon Grove and National City.
The first clinic was Wednesday, February 11, and the second free clinic is on Wednesday, February 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chula Vista Animal Services on 130 Beyer Way. It closes for lunch from noon to 1 p.m., and the event is first come, first served, while supplies last, so organizers urge pet owners to arrive early and be prepared to wait in line.
Dozens of pet owners braved the rain and lined up early outside the Chula Vista Animal Services Facility Wednesday.
“Honestly I feel like it was more convenient, and she does need a little bit more social interaction so her being able to be surrounded by all these other beautiful dogs was really just a great opportunity for her to also just work on her patience and all that, I think it’s something everyone should do,” said Sophia Gil, who brought her dog Raven to the clinic.
The Chula Vista clinic is offering rabies, DAPP and FVRCP vaccines, basic preventive shots that Director of Animal Services Ashley Milo said can save a pet’s life.
“Your distemper and Parvo are your most two common viruses that you’re going to see in dogs. Both are deadly, and they have no immunity after they’ve weaned off of mom, within the first couple months, that immunity is gone. And if you don’t continue to vaccinate them throughout the years, obviously they can come into exposure with it outside,” Milo said.
She said staff typically gives out around 75 to 100 vaccinations at each clinic, and demand keeps rising as veterinary costs climb.
“We have learned over the years that the community needs more help and more help every year, and that’s what we’re here to do. We’re here to support our community in being as healthy as they can be and take care of their pets,” Milo said.
To qualify, pet owners must live in Chula Vista, National City or Lemon Grove, and bring a photo ID plus proof of residency, such as a utility bill.
