There are picky eaters… and then there is this cat, who reacts to dinner like someone just opened a can of regret in front of her. Melon, a Tuxedocat with the soul of a Victorian child who has smelled something “most unseemly,” doesn’t just refuse food. She gags. Full body recoils. Tiny cat dry-heave energy. If cats could file HR complaints, this one would have already escalated.
Honestly, I get it. Show me fish, melon, banana Laffy Taffy, or those flaming hot Cheetos that smell like chemicals and teen boys, and I will also react like my ancestors are warning me not to proceed. My Maine Coon Meatball, meanwhile, would eat drywall if it smelled faintly of chicken, so clearly all cats have opinions.
TikTok user @melon.n.finn shared the now-viral clip of Melon encountering various foods and responding as if each one personally insulted her entire bloodline. The moment anything approaches her nose, she jerks back, gags dramatically, and looks deeply betrayed, like, “You thought I would consume this? In this economy?”

Viewers were both concerned and hysterical. One person asked, “Why is she so dramatic???? There’s no way an ice cream bar sniff is making anybody gag like that.” Another declared, “Now THAT’S a picky eater.” Someone else admitted, “My cat gags at everything, tooooo,” which is both comforting and slightly alarming.
Others were simply losing it. “I’m crying, why is she so dramatic?” one commenter wrote, while another crowned her the “Picky eater final boss.” And honestly, yes. If picky eating were an Olympic sport, Melon would refuse the medal because it probably smells weird.
Meanwhile, my Pomeranian, Kingston, once ate a substance that came out of my cat’s mouth (I will let you fill in the blanks) and then looked at me like I was the problem, so pet differences are real.
Some Cats Are Just Picky Eaters
Ask any cat parent who has bought a case of a certain wet food that their cat loved last week, and you will discover that felines can suddenly decide a certain brand or type of food is barfy. I have had this happen to me so many times. My Maine Coon isn’t as picky as my other two cats, but even he has turned his nose up at a food he gobbled up the day before. Sometimes kitties suddenly become picky because something as small as a stomach upset, stress, dental pain, or even one bad experience with a food can make them decide, with full cat-level stubbornness, that it is now permanently suspicious.
Can Cats Be Allergic to Certain Foods?
Yes, cats can absolutely be allergic or sensitive to certain foods, though true food allergies are less common than simple pickiness or digestive intolerance. When kitties do react poorly, symptoms may include vomiting, gagging, diarrhea, itching, or refusal to eat.
Common things that cause allergic reactions include beef, dairy, fish, and chicken, though any protein source can potentially trigger a reaction. Some cats also develop aversions after a bad experience with a food, meaning they remember and decide, “Never again,” which is relatable behavior for anyone who has ever gotten food poisoning from gas station sushi.
If a cat frequently gags, vomits, or refuses multiple foods, a veterinarian can help rule out allergies, dental problems, nausea, or other underlying issues. But sometimes… a cat is simply being extremely, unapologetically dramatic about dinner.
Melon, for example, appears otherwise healthy. She just seems personally offended that food exists at all, which honestly is how I feel about having to pump my own gas.
