12-Inch Tall Basset Hound Sees 18 Inches of Snow and It’s an Immediate ‘Nope!’

There is brave, and then there is “I will tap the situation first and see how we feel.” Ernie the Basset Hound is very much the second kind, and honestly, that is wisdom.

In the TikTok video, Ernie is posted at the door, getting mentally prepared to head outside like a tiny employee being asked to work during a blizzard. The video caption says, “18 inches of Snow Vs 12 inch tall Basset,” which is already funny before he even takes one step. He reaches out a paw, touches the snow, pulls back just a little, and you can practically see the internal meeting happening. He is not thrilled. He is not encouraged. But with his parents cheering him on, he decides to be bold.

And for a second, it looks like he might do it.

Ernie pushes forward into the snow like a determined little loaf with legs, doing his best impression of a dog who definitely did not ask for this weather. The post caption says, “I am a snow plow 🛻,” and honestly, yes. For a few glorious moments, he kind of is. He’s trudging, he’s trying, he’s committed. It is heroic in the most Basset Hound way possible, which is to say slow, skeptical, and deeply adorable.

Then he reaches the thicker snow.

The second he sinks, the whole vibe changes. You know that moment when someone realizes the plan sounded better indoors? That is Ernie. He turns around almost immediately, like, “I have seen enough. This experiment has concluded.” But what makes the clip even better is that he still handles business before heading back inside. Respect. Even in defeat, he remains practical.

That’s what makes this video so funny and so lovable. It is not just a dog rejecting snow. It is a full, tiny drama arc: hesitation, courage, struggle, acceptance, retreat. Ernie gives us the whole story in under a minute, and every second feels relatable. Because when the snow is taller than you, nobody expects a long speech. A clean turnaround is a perfectly valid response.

I also love that he gave it a real shot before declaring “nope.” That is character. That is effort. That is a short king facing impossible odds and choosing warmth.

Snow Days Hit Different for Low-Rider Dogs

For short-legged dogs like Basset Hounds, deep snow can be more than annoying because it can be cold, exhausting, and hard to move through fast. On heavy snow days, clear a small path for potty breaks, keep outings short, and dry their paws, belly, and legs when they come back in so snow and ice do not sit on their skin. A quick towel by the door becomes your best friend.

According to the AKC, winter weather can be especially tough on paws and smaller or shorter dogs, so it helps to watch for signs they are too cold and keep outdoor time practical, not heroic.

I love dogs like Ernie because he still gave it his best shot, and that tiny, brave paw test before the full nope is exactly the kind of honesty I can relate to.
