Golden Retriever’s Sweet Reaction to Cat Using Him as a Bed Is Everything

Movies and TV series have long tried to show us that dogs and cats are not the best of friends. Tom and Butch are always fighting. But in domestic homes where they are properly trained, they tend to get along well with each other. Sometimes, they are even best of friends.

A YouTube video from @BuddyTheGoldenRetriever shows exactly how close friends dogs and cats can be. In the video, we see a domestic cat curling up to her golden retriever friend. She cuddles with him all the time and eventually falls asleep on his body. In a way, the cat uses her golden retriever friend as her own personal mattress.

The body language of both pets shows they are close and loving. The golden retriever has loose muscles, and his ears sit in a neutral position. He doesn’t show any stiff posture or even say a word. Instead, he lies comfortably and allows his cat friend to snuggle.

What might seem like an odd scene is quite normal in many multi-pet households. Cats sleep only when they feel safe. And in this case, the cat loves her 60- to 70-pound dog bed.

How Did the Internet React?

Dogs and cats are among the most popular pets in the world. And when the two become friends, the Internet goes wild. Fans loved the friendship between the two, saying things like “I hear purring, thats a soft happy kitty,” “The kitten loves sleeping on his big, furry blanket. Have a beautiful day everyone!” and “So adorable i could watch forever im a big animal lover thank you for sharing.”

And if you need any motivation to get through the day, one user summed it up perfectly: “If you cannot deal with what is happening in the world, this video will make you feel better for sure.”

Can Cats and Dogs Be Friends?

The idea that cats and dogs are natural enemies is often a misconception. Yes, some dogs chase small animals like cats. But if they are raised in the same household, dogs and cats can absolutely live together in harmony.

The key is early socialization during the critical period, which is between three months and nine months for dogs and two and nine months for cats. During this period, their brains are more receptive to forming new social attachments. When dogs get introduced to cats during this puppy window, they do not view them as prey. Instead, they view them as part of the pack and the family.

But it is all about routine. Families living in households with different pets often use separate feeding areas to prevent resource guarding. Both dogs and cats need space to retreat when they need distance.

Best Dog Breeds for Living with Cats

Breed temperament plays a crucial role, but it doesn’t have to be the case. Individual personality and upbringing can make a difference. They matter more than the dog breed label.

Yes, golden retrievers are widely regarded as among the most compatible dogs for households with cats due to their low reactivity and trainability.

Some other cat-friendly dogs include Labrador retrievers, beagles, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Bernese mountain dogs and German shepherds. The biggest challenge is dogs bred for high prey drive, including terriers and sighthounds. They need more management and training around cats.

But as we see in the video, dogs and cats can be close to the point where they sleep together. The golden retriever here makes space and remains calm. The cat responds by sleeping on him without hesitation. It is a quiet example of how two species with different instincts can learn each other’s language and share the same room, and sometimes the same bed.
