The Saint Louis Zoo welcomed a couple of adorable new residents last month with the births of two kulu calves.
According to the zoo, Mabel was born on Feb. 2 and Mildred “Millie” on Feb. 23 to first-time moms Judith and Jamilah. Both calves are doing well.
Lesser kudus — the symbol of the Saint Louis Zoo — are members of the Bovidae family, which also includes bison and cattle. They live in the thickets of East Africa, and their coats are marked with vertical white stripes to camouflage them in their woodland habitat.
The species is near-threatened, as its population is decreasing and at-risk of extinction in the wild, according to the zoo.
Mabel will make her public debut at Red Rocks in the coming weeks, and Millie will make her debut later this spring.
