For pet owners, few things are more terrifying than the thought of one of our fur babies going missing. The endless searching, the helpless waiting, and unwaivering worry of what has happened to our beloved four-legged friend is just about the worst feeling one can imagine. For one couple traveling across the country during a move to California, that worst-case scenario became their reality when their beloved 11-year-old pup ran off during a routine pit stop in Colorado.
Heartbroken and devastated, Steven Maa and his partner Kate enlisted the help of Summit Lost Pet Rescue, a nonprofit organization focused on reuniting owners with their missing pets.
After an exhaustive search that lasted nearly a month and a half, Rocky was located. And the moment he was reunited with his dad may be the sweetest thing on the internet right now.
In a news clip shared by @abcworldnews, Rocky enters a room where his dad is waiting to greet him. After a few cautious steps, Rocky quickly recognizes his favorite human and breaks into an enthusiastic whole-body tail wag. The two share a brief embrace as Rocky leans his full bodyweight against his dad, causing him to topple slightly before the joyful moment continues.
And speaking of body weight, it is reported that Rocky lost nearly half of his weight during his 43 days on the lam. However, other than needing to recoup some of that, the pup is miraculously in good health.

An Incredible Journey
Stories about dogs surviving seemingly impossible conditions or finding their way back home are more common than you’d think. Researchers believe that strong senses and powerful instincts play a big role. According to the American Kennel Club, dogs rely heavily on their heightened sense of smell, as well as their ability to recognize familiar objects, patterns, and landmarks to navigate their surroundings in situations like Rocky’s.
While not every lost pet is able to use scent recognition to retrace their steps, these remarkable instincts often help dogs survive and sometimes even guide them back to the people they love most.
