Some dogs get adopted through a shelter. Others arrive in a way that feels almost like fate. While most people spend days or weeks trying to find the right dog, for one family, it was the other way around. A stray dog found them by walking into their yard and deciding to call it home.

As the owner explained, she would love to find the previous owners, only to ask them how they could let him get so thin and tired. The dog didn’t have a collar, a microchip or anyone searching for him.

He wandered into the yard of his new owners looking for help. And he hasn’t looked back since. The fun twist of the story is that the dog and his new mom have a common feature: their matching eyeliner.

Fans noticed the similarity and were quick to comment on the Reddit post, and his new mom replied, “He was born with the perfect cat-eye. I am honestly a bit jealous of his natural makeup game.”

It is not unusual for stay dogs to try to find people who feel safe. They can read body language better than us, including tone of voice, posture, eye contact and movement. This dog probably felt his new mom was the perfect choice for him.

What People Are Saying

Many fans praised the woman for saving the adorable dog. They said things like, “Dude just wanted some love. Bless your beautiful heart” and “Lost/abandoned dogs make the best pets because they are forever grateful to you for saving them.”

Some shared their own rescue stories, saying, “We have an Australian Shepard mix who is like this.  One day she was in my backyard eating lettuce (her favorite food)…three years later she never leaves my side.”

And there were also fans who shared their rescue stories with dogs that look a lot like the one in the story. The owner of this sweet dog replied, “Separated at birth! It’s so heartwarming to see another pup with that same soulful look.”

The Eyeliner Coincidence Everyone Noticed

The most amazing detail of this story and this dog was not his friendly demeanor, but his face. The dog has distinct black markings around his eyes that some people thought look like a heavy application of eyeliner—and it’s a look that his new mom happens to share.

Of all the details, the matching eyeliner might be the most memorable. Pet parents often notice similar things. People often say dogs begin to resemble their owners over time. Yet, in this case, the resemblance shows up immediately.

How Rescue Dogs Connect to Their New Parents

Many rescue dogs form strong bonds with their new owners, but it may take time. In some cases, though, like here, the connection happens instantly.

Some dogs settle in right away. Others take days or weeks to relax. Dog behaviorists often talk about the 3-3-3 rule for rescue dogs. According to the theory, dogs need three days to decompress, three weeks to learn the household routine and three months to fully feel at home.

In the beginning, rescue dogs might follow you from one room to another because they feel safe with you. Sometimes, they might not get close to you. But at some point, a rescue dog no longer feels like a guest, but rather as part of the family.
