Baby Elephant Eating Her ‘Crunch Brunch’ Is to Die For

It’s time to get up close and personal with a giant, snacking elephant. Tula-Tu, the adorable one-year-old baby at the Oregon Zoo, had a delightful time munching on bamboo with her mom and the rest of the herd.

The video caption deemed this, “Crunch brunch,” and in the clip we also catch a glimpse of Rose-Tu, Tula’s mama.

As usual, everyone loved Tula with some viewers jumping into the comments to say they’d been there and seen her in person. She was probably even cuter IRL.

Still, @talkn8chatn deemed her “Amazing” with @Smith Jackson calling her “Lovely” plus @ALICE NELSON adding “Wow.” We need more Tula-Tu!

Why did the zoo feed the elephants bamboo?

More than being an adorable activity, the bamboo brunch served as an enrichment excursion. The Oregon Zoo explained, “Care staff ‘planted’ the fresh bamboo throughout the elephants’ outdoor habitat, and young Tula-Tu — along with her mom and aunties — harvested it using their trunks.” They seem to be having a great time grabbing up the grass.

The zoo staff added that, while Tula still nurses, she also enjoyed treat time. At a year, she doesn’t quite have a handle on her trunk and still needs to practice a bit. You can watch closely and see her trunk-maneuvers in training.

She, like all elephants, needs the boost to get big and strong as she already tops 1,000 pounds at her last weigh in. A member of the care team expanded on this, “‘A thousand pounds sounds like a lot for a toddler, but it’s still small for an elephant…. Her mom weighs over 7,500 pounds and her dad is over 10,000, so Tula’s got a lot of growing to do.'” They added that an adult will consume between 165 and 330 pounds of food per day. That’s a large and hungry beastie if we ever saw one.

No matter how much she’s eating, it was a joy to watch Tula-Tu get in on the feast and show off her trunkin’ skills!
