Break out the confetti—there’s a rabies-free graduate to celebrate.
The San Diego Humane Society recently shared a heartwarming video on Facebook showing staff throwing a special rabies quarantine graduation party for a sweet rescue pup named Churro, a 10-month-old Maltese.

In the video, Churro can be seen wearing a tiny gold paper crown while shelter staff gather around him in party hats. The little dog is showered with kisses, pets and hugs as he happily soaks up the attention. Streamers, smiles and plenty of celebratory energy fill the room as everyone marks the end of a long journey for the resilient pup.
A Long Road to Recovery
Churro first arrived at the San Diego Humane Society after being found severely injured in a backyard in the San Diego area. Shelter staff believe the tiny puppy had likely been attacked by a wild animal, possibly a coyote.
The injuries were serious. Churro had a severe neck wound and one of his front legs had been badly damaged, ultimately requiring amputation.
Despite everything he went through, the pup showed remarkable resilience.
Because the attack was believed to involve a wild animal and Churro’s rabies vaccination status was unknown, California law required that he undergo a six-month rabies quarantine. During this time, Churro needed to remain in controlled isolation while staff monitored him for signs of rabies.
Fortunately, he didn’t have to face that recovery alone. The shelter’s veterinary manager generously stepped in to foster Churro, giving him a comfortable and loving home while he healed and waited out the quarantine period.

Graduation Day Finally Arrives
After 180 days, Churro officially completed his quarantine, and the shelter staff decided the moment deserved a proper celebration.
The adorable pup was treated to his very own rabies quarantine “graduation” party, complete with festive decorations and a crowd of cheering caregivers who had supported him through his recovery.
The celebration wasn’t just about marking the end of the quarantine. It was also a chance to honor the bravery of a dog who overcame serious injuries and adapted to life as a “tripawd” with remarkable spirit.
A Sweet New Chapter Ahead
With quarantine behind him and his health fully restored, Churro is now ready for the next chapter of his life: finding a forever home.
His journey—from a badly injured puppy to a crown-wearing quarantine graduate—has already captured plenty of hearts online.
And judging by that graduation celebration, one thing is clear: this brave little dog has a lot of people cheering him on as he begins his next adventure.
