About Greyhounds

Greyhounds are famous not just for their speed, but for their distinct builds. They are often extremely skinny, which is normal for the breed, and typically weigh roughly 60 to 70 pounds. They grow to around two to three feet tall, and their slim, long legs make them amazing sprinters. This physical build contrasts with their calm and gentle personalities. Most greyhounds are typically calm, with gentle and friendly dispositions. They make good indoor dogs but need to stretch their legs every once in a while. Greyhounds are gentle with humans and great for families. So why are they so fast?

Super Speedsters

Greyhounds’ speed isn’t just a fact of nature but the result of deliberate evolution shaped through years of breeding. This breed is easily one of the oldest in the world, dating back thousands of years to ancient Egypt. Greyhounds belong to a group of dogs known as “sighthounds.” Unlike scent hound breeds like beagles and bloodhounds that rely on scent for hunting or detection, sighthounds rely on their sight and speed. Sighthounds have been used by humans for hunting animals like rabbits and foxes. Greyhounds spot their prey from far away, use their long legs to sprint after it, and quickly catch it.

Greyhounds are extremely quick, running around 40 to 45 miles per hour in short sprints. This means they can match a car driving on a road and are about one and a half times faster than Usain Bolt at top speed. They achieve such speed thanks to bodies specifically built for running. They have long legs that create long strides. This allows them to cover great distances in a single step, with some dogs’ strides reaching up to 20 feet.

Greyhounds also have flexible spines. When they extend it, their body can stretch out, and when they compress it, their legs can bunch up underneath their body. This makes them like living springs, propelling them rapidly along their path. Another fascinating fact is that they run in a manner similar to cheetahs. By launching off all four feet at once, they spend time airborne during each stride. All of these factors, combined with their large lungs, powerful muscles, and overall shape, make them the fastest dogs in the world.
