Dogs are notoriously caring and protective, often watching over those they consider vulnerable. Whether it’s a human baby or a baby animal, canines have an instinct to look out for little ones.

Bambi the Miniature Dachshund is a wonderful example of this loving behavior, as she stepped up to serve as a foster mom to some baby ducklings found nearby.

In the TikTok from @bambitheweenie, the doting Doxie sat at the kitchen table and stared at the baby ducklings to make sure they were safe. The video explained the strong connection between the two species.

“We saved ducklings and they bonded to our Mini Dachshund,” the onscreen text shared.

Another scene featured Bambi running in the grass with the two ducklings following close behind. She stopped to check on the precious pair and barked, probably giving them some sort of motherly directive. Wherever Bambi went, the baby ducks trailed her every move.

Followers marveled at the sweet bond between the Dachshund and the ducklings, with some suggesting it as a book idea.

“This is the cutest thing ever!! The faster the dog goes, the faster the little ducks go!” one pointed out.

“This would be the cutest children’s book,” another noted.

“They’re like, when will we get two more legs like mama?” a follower posted.

“I’m going to need to see continuous updates on this trio,” someone commented.

Can Dogs and Ducks Be Friends?

While Bambi quickly took on a maternal role with the two baby ducklings, there are ways you can pave the way for a positive relationship between these two very different animals should the circumstances arise. These include:

• Observing the duck before introducing your dog to ensure the duck isn’t aggressive.

• Slow, monitored introductions with a leash, starting at a decent distance apart.

• Training your dog to respond when you call their name. This can immediately interrupt incidents of chasing or unwanted behavior.

• Rewarding positive behavior with treats when you notice your dog being gentle with a duck or keeping an acceptable distance from them.

Bambi beautifully demonstrates the loving and protective nature of dogs toward all creatures.
