A Cleveland man who stopped after spotting flames inside a house ended up helping save not one, but two lives during a dramatic morning fire.

According to a Facebook post shared by the Cleveland Division of Fire on March 10, Richard Keith Taylor was driving southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive with his wife, Melanie Roberts-Taylor, and their dog Ace when he noticed something alarming near the Farringdon roundabout.

“The window was glowing with fire,” Taylor said. “We had to make sure everyone was out.”

He quickly pulled over, honked his horn and ran toward the home while yelling warnings to anyone inside. As he approached the front porch, he saw an elderly resident step briefly into the doorway before turning back into the smoke-filled house. Taylor climbed the steps and pushed through a security door to enter the residence. Inside, he located the woman and carried her out of the building as conditions rapidly worsened.

Fire officials said that as Taylor crossed back over the porch with the resident in his arms, the large window he had first noticed shattered. Smoke and flames burst forward and ignited part of the porch roof, intensifying the already dangerous situation.

He brought the woman to his vehicle to help shield her from the smoke and cold while emergency crews arrived. Soon after, firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and secure the scene.

With fire companies now on site and the situation stabilizing, Taylor took Ace for a short walk nearby. The dog, described by officials as large, friendly and energetic, was visibly excited by the commotion surrounding the emergency response.

After the fire was brought under control, Taylor tied Ace to a fence post near the driveway so he could continue watching the crews at work. It was then that Ace began behaving in a way that quickly caught his owner’s attention. The dog started pulling hard against his leash, sniffing and straining toward a boarded-up basement window. Taylor alerted a battalion chief on scene, explaining his concern.

“He smells something down there,” Taylor told the officer. Firefighters returned to the basement to investigate and eventually located a small brown dog inside a room behind a closed door. Officials said the frightened animal had remained unaffected by smoke and heat despite being trapped during the fire.

The successful discovery marked a second rescue tied to Taylor’s decision to stop that morning — one made by him and another prompted by his dog’s instincts.

Reflecting on the experience afterward, Taylor credited timing and circumstance for putting him in a position to help. “It’s God’s work,” he said. “Just glad I was in the right place at the right time.”

In its post, the Cleveland Division of Fire praised both Taylor and Ace for their quick thinking and determination. The department described the incident as a powerful reminder of how awareness, courage and teamwork between community members and first responders can make a critical difference during emergencies.
