Golden Retriever Puppy Blowing Bubbles in His Mud Bath Has Exactly Zero Regrets

Caring for (and cleaning up after) any pet is a major responsibility, but some animals require less maintenance than others. Sometimes, however, even the cleanest, most well-behaved animals can’t resist getting dirty! These messes are simply a pet parent’s rite of passage, but that doesn’t make them any easier to clean.

A chaotic Golden Retriever puppy named Charlie knows how to keep his parents on their toes, but on March 23, his sudden need for a mud bath tested everyone’s patience. Even so, not even his stunned mom could resist getting his fun on film—especially when he started blowing bubbles in the mud!

What a naughty puppy! Charlie doesn’t mess around when it comes to mud baths, especially when the window of opportunity is closing. As his mom explained in the video’s description, she walked away for a minute, and he saw his chance; he ran to the last uncovered spot in the yard to take a dip while he still could!

“I didn’t know they made chocolate-dipped Goldens,” one commentator joked. Charlie’s long legs look like chocolate pretzel sticks! The rest of his coat is only lightly toasted, but the bubbles he blew in the mud were the cherries on top.

Dog parents who have been in similar situations know that if you don’t laugh about a muddy dog, you just might cry. Cleaning mud out of carpet or patio cushions is bad enough, but wrangling a slippery, muddy dog into the bath is nearly impossible! Luckily, garden hoses can make the clean-up ten times easier, and it’s hard to be upset when a dog is having fun.

“Honestly, I can’t even be mad,” another viewer agreed. “Do you see those perfect bubbles? 11/10.” If his bubble-blowing is any sign of what’s to come, this puppy is going to be one strong swimmer!

Why Do Dogs Like Mud?

Canine mud baths may be a universal experience among pet parents, but why do dogs like mud so much? As Oakland Veterinary Referral Services explained, it can be about more than having fun or causing trouble.

On a hot day, mud can be a quick (albeit messy) way to cool down. It can also camouflage scent, which would have been helpful for your dog’s wild ancestors when running from a predator. Modern dogs don’t need to hide their scent, but the ancient instincts may still be present.

As Charlie proves, diving in the mud can also be just plain fun! But the bath that comes after? Not so much!
