Five years is a long time to wonder what happened to a beloved pet. For one Los Angeles dog mom, that question finally got an answer—and the ending is almost hard to believe.
A Disappearance That Changed Everything
Back in 2018, Michelle Bluestone adopted a schnauzer mix named Lola, and the two quickly became inseparable. For three years, they were constant companions, until one day in 2021, Lola slipped through a backyard fence and vanished. It’s every pet parent’s worst nightmare.
Bluestone spent months searching for her dog. She put up flyers and posted messages on local Facebook pages, asking strangers and fellow pet parents to “please help me find my baby.”
She held onto hope that Lola’s microchip would eventually lead to a phone call. But as time passed with no sightings, no updates and no leads, that hope slowly faded. Eventually, she was forced to accept that she likely would never see Lola again.
In the years that followed, life kept moving. According to KTLA 5 and her own Facebook updates, Bluestone got married, started a new job, moved to another part of L.A., continued her education and even adopted another dog.

An Unbelievable Call
Then, in February 2026, everything changed. A dog had been found on the side of the road in Los Angeles, alone but alive. After being brought to a police station and transferred to a local animal shelter, staff scanned the dog’s microchip.
It was Lola. After five years, the call Bluestone had once waited for finally came.
“I was in such shock and couldn’t even believe it,” Bluestone said in a KTLA 5 news clip.
The Emotional Reunion
When Bluestone arrived at the shelter, the reunion was exactly what you’d expect after years apart—emotional, overwhelming and unforgettable.
Wrapped in a blanket, Lola was brought out to see her. Bluestone covered her mouth, visibly emotional, as the reality of the moment hit. Against all odds, they had found their way back to each other.
A New Chapter Begins
Lola, now 11 years old, did need some medical care after being found, including treatment for overgrown nails and the removal of 11 rotted teeth. But overall, she was in surprisingly good condition.
Since then, she’s been recovering and adjusting to her new life, getting to know the family that grew while she was gone.
Stories like this are rare, but they’re a powerful reminder of why microchipping—and keeping the microchip information up to date—is so important. Because sometimes, even after years apart, happy endings are still possible.
