An elephant at the Albuquerque Biopark in New Mexico surprised everyone after she took a leisurely stroll through the zoo.
In a video shared by CBS News on TikTok, a 52-year-old Asian Elephant named Alice was found strolling through the Biopark after she left her enclosure on March 29. In the video captured by the zoo, Alice walked around the area near her enclosure, inspected her surroundings, and even snacked on some plants.
According to the outlet, the Biopark’s staff found Alice before the zoo’s opening and safely escorted her back to her enclosure.
According to the Biopark’s official website, Alice was spotted “at approximately 7:30 in the morning by Zoo Security briefly outside of her primary habitat area.”
“Animal care staff were notified and arrived on site within 10 minutes and initiated emergency response protocol,” they confirmed in their statement. “The staff were able to call Alice safely back to her habitat. No other elephants left the habitat, and no staff were ever in harm’s way. Alice has no injuries but will remain under close monitoring by animal care staff.”
Because of Alice’s impromptu adventure outside, the zoo delayed their opening for about 30 minutes to ensure guest and animal safety.
“Paths were cleared of debris from where Alice ate plants and trees in the vicinity of her habitat,” the statement continued. “Staff located the section of perimeter fencing to the elephant habitat that was compromised, and it has been secured, with repairs and reinforcement underway. That area of the elephant habitat will remain closed while the fence is repaired and reinforced.”
