The post 13 Animals You Should Never Try to Pet (Even Though They’re Super Cute) appeared first on A-Z Animals.
As humans, we’re easily drawn to adorable critters. Whether due to their fluffy nature, over-sized ears, or cute expression, some animals just seem to beg for scritches! And many of these cutest-of-animals appear friendly; but in the wild, appearances can be deceiving. Even animals that are small and fluffy can be far from harmless. They generally rely on sharp claws, strong bites, or defensive instincts to protect themselves. They don’t know the difference between a kind human and an ominous predator, so they react accordingly.
Some of the cutest animals on Earth are also the ones you should admire from a safe distance, from fuzzy foxes to tiny rodents. Whether through powerful defenses, protecting their territory, or the diseases they carry, the animals on this list can do major damage, despite their adorable appearance. Here are 13 super cute creatures you should never try to pet, no matter how sweet they look.

Binturongs are also known as “bearcats,” because they resemble a cross between a cat and a bear. This unusual little mammal combines two of nature’s cutest animals in one! Despite their cuddly appearance, they have strong claws and sharp teeth. If threatened, they can become aggressive and should not be approached.
2. Raccoon

Raccoons may look like harmless, neighborhood visitors, but they are still wild animals. These masked scavengers can carry diseases like rabies and may scratch or bite if they feel threatened. Though they frequently grow accustomed to humans and venture fairly close to people, it’s best to admire them from a distance.
3. Koala

Koalas may appear calm and cuddly, but these small eucalyptus crunchers are not as timid as they seem. Though generally docile, they have sharp claws and can become aggressive when stressed or disturbed. Giving the small climbers space is the safest option.
4. Prairie Dog

Prairie dogs are social, squeaky rodents that look almost like tiny groundhogs. Despite their charm and endearing perky posture, they’ve been linked to outbreaks of plague (Yersinia pestis) in parts of the U.S. Admire them from a distance and avoid contact.
5. Sugar Glider

It’s difficult to find an animal more adorable than the sugar glider. In the wild, these tiny, wide-eyed possums reside in coastal areas of Australia, throughout New Guinea, and on some Indonesian islands. Despite their small size, these pocket-sized mammals have strong defenses and can become stressed and aggressive when approached. They won’t hesitate to sink their needle-sharp teeth into a perceived threat.
6. Arctic Fox

Arctic foxes are so pristinely beautiful they’re almost mythical looking. The small mammals are well-adapted to harsh, cold environments due in part to a fluffy white coat. While they are not typically dangerous to humans, they are still wild and may bite if threatened. It’s best to observe them from afar.
7. Red Panda

If there’s an animal on Earth cuter than the red panda, we’re certainly not aware of it. These stuffed animals come to life feature fluffy tails, adorable faces, and a nose that begs to be booped. Despite their cuteness overload, they are solitary animals that prefer to be left alone. If disturbed, they can become defensive and bite.
8. Sea Otter

Sea otters are adorable in appearance, but it’s their personality that truly pushes them over the top on the cuteness scale. The little guys are famous for engaging in adorable behaviors like casually floating on their backs, holding paws, and toting their favorite rock everywhere they go. With such quirky traits, it’s easy to see why people are tempted to get closer to the marine mammals. Sometimes they practically look like they’re inviting you to join them! But despite their sweet face and playful nature, they’re protective animals with strong jaws.
9. Chipmunk

Chipmunks are small, energetic, and often seem comfortable around humans, especially when snacks are on the table. The delightful little rodents are a joy to watch! However, they can carry ticks and diseases like Lyme disease. They will bite if they feel threatened.
10. Bats

Some of you might be thinking, “I thought this list was only for cute animals,” but we happen to think bats are irresistible in their own way. These winged mammals of the night are often perceived as mysterious, but we love their over-sized ears and big, shiny eyes. However, they are well-known carriers of rabies and other viruses. If you find a bat in need of help, it is best to call your local wildlife rehabilitator.
11. Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are small animals with ultra sweet faces and distinctive spines. Those spines are part of a carefully designed defense mechanism and can cause injury if handled improperly. Wild hedgehogs can also carry bacteria like salmonella, so it’s best not to touch them.
12. Wombat

Wombats are like chunky, fluffy burrowing animals with round faces and stubby legs that can melt your heart. They may waddle around like oversized teddy bears, but they’re surprisingly strong and built for digging. If they feel threatened, they can become aggressive and even charge.
13. Fennec Fox

The award for most cartoonishly large ears almost certainly goes to the fennec fox. The stand-out feature is only enhanced when contrasted with their dainty face and small body. With their soft fur and sweet expressions, these little guys seem like they’re begging for scritches! But despite their charming toy-like appearance, they’re still wild animals with sharp teeth, quick reflexes, and a skittish nature.
