18-Year-Old Shelter Cat Surrendered for Being ‘Too Old’ Has the Entire Internet in Tears

Senior dogs and cats have so much love to give and bring true joy to everyone they meet. Yet potential adopters are often hesitant to adopt in this age range due to limited life expectancy and health issues.

Smokey the 18-year old cat was surrendered by her family because of her age. This sweet feline was in despair after losing her home and in need of a second chance.

In the TikTok from @122.luvvmel, the fluffy gray cat sat in her cage at the Lancaster Animal Care Center in California with a sad look on her face. The caption gave details about Smokey and advocated for someone to give her a home.

“Smokey is an 18-year-old spayed female,” the caption explained. “She was family surrendered for being too old. She’s a sweet girl and super loving. She’s okay with other cats and unknown if okay with dogs, she’s great with kids as well. Okay to go out on health waiver. Please don’t let Smokey’s last years be in a shelter!!”

The precious feline must have been so confused and discouraged at being put in a shelter so many years after being part of a family. The team at the Lancaster Animal Care Center placed plenty of posts rallying for her to be adopted.

Followers were stunned that Smokey was surrendered because of her age, with several offering to adopt her on the spot. Many shared stories of their own senior cats and the joy they brought them.

“My own Smokey Bear is getting up there in age and I am grateful for everyday,” one wrote.

“How do people do this?!” another asked. “My childhood cat is 22 and still living her best life with my parents. My dad is her favorite person.”

“We have 9 cats. She’s more than welcome to spend her days with us,” a follower offered.
