Both of my dogs detest going to the vet. My senior Dachshund shakes from the second we walk into the waiting area until we are back in the car on our way home. Her Pug brother takes a stronger stance and literally plants his tush down in the parking lot and refuses to move. I have to literally carry him in every time. Then they both give me the cold shoulder for a few hours after their appointment.
Penny the Golden Retriever puppy takes a very different approach to her vet visits. The fluffy fur baby was clearly unintimidated by her medical exam and saw it as the ideal time to nap.
Penny was on the scale in the vet’s office, sound asleep as the doctor took down her weight. Despite being completely unfamiliar with the medical environment, Penny was clearly relaxed. All she needed was some candles and serenity music for a full-blown spa day.
“POV: You sleep through your first vet appoinment,” the onscreen text read in the TikTok from @misspennyperry.
It’s not like Penny was left alone during her visit. The doctor examined her, listened to her heartbeat, and checked her vitals. Penny slept through it all. Even when her mom picked her up, the precious puppy never opened her eyes.
Followers were charmed by Penny’s zen vibe but cautioned that she may not be this calm during upcoming appointments.
“It’s exhausting being that cute!” one noted.
“She’s conserving her energy before she transforms into a dinosaur phase,” another remarked.
“Enjoy it now…. wait till you get to the stage where they aren’t sleeping 18 hours a day,” a follower posted.
“Total CHAOS once you get home,” someone remarked.
How to Help Your Dog Stay Calm During Vet Visits
Many dogs get anxious when they see the vet. The sounds and smells of a medical office, plus being around other nervous dogs, can be triggering for our fur babies.
There are some simple ways to help your canine cutie relax or get distracted. Treats are always an effective tool in creating a positive association. A dog’s food drive often takes precedence over anything else on their mind and can help them refocus while at the vet’s office.

Bringing a favorite plush toy can also provide comfort for your pooch. Also consider using a lick mat or treat dispenser to keep them occupied while in the waiting room. This activity releases endorphins and helps your dog self-soothe.
Be sure to keep yourself calm. Your dog picks up on your anxiety, so staying relaxed for your dog to see can be very beneficial.
Maybe in time, your dog will take their vet visit as an opportunity to catch some Zs just like Penny.
