What’s one timeless and loyal dog breed vets recommend? Labs! “Labrador Retrievers have always been one of the most popular breeds, and for good reason,” Dr. Cahn explains. She goes on to say that Labs were bred as versatile working dogs, and it serves them well in their most common gig these days as loving companions.

“Labs are intelligent and easy to train, highly motivated by both food and human affection,” Dr. Cahn adds. “Their playful and outgoing personality means they usually get along well with children and other animals, and they enjoy an active lifestyle by their owner’s side.”

While these are iconic dog breeds, they can have some health struggles, so while you’re cuddling and watching your Lab follow you around the house, keep an eye out for obesity and signs of joint issues (like limping). Dr. Cahn says Labs are at higher risk for both issues, and reports that regular veterinary care and portion control are important.

Humans’ love affair with the Dachshund spans centuries today, making this classic dog breed a beloved companion in homes around the world.

“This breed originated in Germany during the Middle Ages as a little hunting dog,” Dr. Hennet notes. “With long bodies, short legs and powerful digging abilities, these dogs could pursue their prey—badgers, foxes and the like—into their burrows.”

These days, Dachshunds commonly burrow into their families’ bed covers (and hearts). “Dachshunds are playful and often have fun personalities, which makes them another popular choice,” Fredal says.

Fredal adds that Dachshunds’ history as badger hunters can contribute to more stubbornness, especially during training, but they can thrive with people who can commit to consistent, positive training. When they have owners like that, these are the best loyal dogs you could ever have.

Breed Stats:

  • Personality: Curious, friendly, spunky

  • Height: 8-9 inches (standard); 5-6 inches (miniature)

  • Weight: 16-32 pounds (standard); 11 pounds and under (miniature)

3. German Shepherd

This classic dog breed got a boost in popularity decades ago and have been a famous dog breed to have as a pet throughout history. “The popularity of this breed surged after World War I, when German Shepherds hit the big screen in roles like Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart,” Dr. Hennet says. “Children and adults alike have been captivated by the noble and endearing profile of the German Shepherd ever since.”

Unlike some Hollywood-driven narratives about love, the many perks of being counted as a German Shepherd’s friend have withstood many “sniff tests.” “German Shepherds are very loyal, smart, brave and protective,” says Dr. Melissa Witherell, DVM, a veterinarian at Chewy. “They love to keep you safe and the home safe as a personal bodyguard. They bond deeply with their people and families, which helps give them a purpose to keep the ones they love safe and free from harm.”

Dr. Witherell adds that German Shepherds thrive in homes with kids or even solo pet parents. “Their devotion lasts a lifetime,” Dr. Witherell shares.

Breed Stats:

  • Personality: Courageous, confident, smart

This classic dog breed instantly adds character to a home, making it a beloved pet to have. “Frenchies are very affectionate, charming, funny and low-maintenance dogs,” Dr. Witherell raves. “They love to hang out on your lap or go to the dog park, and will have you doubling over in laughter on the daily.”

When it comes to the ideal home, French Bulldogs are surprisingly versatile. “While they do well in smaller spaces or in cities, they are versatile, so they also do well in a standard home,” explains Amanda Fredal, a licensed veterinary technician and director of live pet care at Pet Supplies Plus. “They sociable dogs, so they do well with children and make great family pets.”

Breed Stats:

  • Personality: Playful, smart, adaptable

Cocker Spaniels are often considered some of the happiest dogs around, a trait that has long endeared them to families. Hollywood has also helped boost their popularity, giving this classic dog breed an extra dose of fame on the big screen.

“I’m sure many people picture Lady from Lady and the Tramp when they think of the Cocker Spaniel breed,” Fredal reports. “Their big eyes and affectionate, gentle demeanor make them extremely lovable.”

Indeed, like Lady, Cocker Spaniels are as sweet as pie with a playful, adventurous side. “Cocker Spaniels make great companions as they are easily trained and friendly,” Fredal states. “The timeless breed does need a lot of physical exercise and stimulation, so they do well in active households.”

Breed Stats:

  • Personality: Smart, gentle, happy

6. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

We’re not done with Spaniels just yet. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is another beautiful and classic dog breed that has long snuggled up to humans.

“These sweethearts are bright, affectionate and curious,” shares Dr. Cahn. “They can thrive in almost any environment as long as they receive plenty of love and attention. Their lower exercise needs, eagerness to please and calm nature make them ideal family dogs.”

It’s important to choose a reputable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breeder. Dr. Cahn notes that this popular breed is predisposed to heart and neurological conditions and responsible breeders will perform bloodline testing to help minimize these risks.

Breed Stats:

  • PersonalityAffectionate, gentle, graceful

7. Beagle

When it comes to classic dog breeds with strong bonds, the Beagle is one of them. “A home with Beagles will not be a quiet one, but it will certainly be a jolly one,” gushes Dr. Margo Hennet, DVM, the senior veterinary genetics manager with Wisdom Panel.

Still, this classic dog breed will never stray from loving you. “Beagles have independent streaks but, being bred for pack work, are highly social companions who thrive in active households with children or other dogs,” Dr. Hennet continues. “The combination of a small, sturdy dog and a powerful scent drive means that these dogs need a large, well-fenced backyard and lots of chances to run and explore with their nose.”

Like Labs, Dr. Hennet says Beagles are very food motivated, which can be a win during training ,but a loss when they swipe your lunch. Because of that, it puts them at a higher risk for obesity.

Breed Stats:

  • Personality: Curious, cheery, alert
