My Dachshund-Miniature Pinchser mix has beautiful black and tan markings that bring out the best of both breeds. I find her fur to be fabulous, though her coat resembles many of these hybrids. Her Pug mix brother has a thick gold coat, almost like a honey color. He’s adorable and a head-turner more because of his charm rather than his coat.
Ralph the Cocker Spaniel puppy has a fur pattern that is eye-catching to say the least. The precious pooch has such unique patches on his coat it looks as if he’s wearing a quilt.
In the TikTok from @ralphie.showcocke, the adorable puppy was lying on the couch looking into the camera. The big black patch covering the left side of Ralphie’s face to right underneath his eye would make anyone do a double take. The rest of his facial fur was gold, making for a striking contrast between the two colors.
Raphie’s body had the same patchwork quilt-like pattern, with big black splotches of color blending into the golden hues. We’ve all seen dogs with spots and different streaks, but this unique mosaic of fur was truly stunning.
These very distinct fur markings are usually caused by a somatic mutation, which is a genetic alteration that occurs in the non-reproductive cells after conception. It’s a spontaneous occurence rather than hereditary and cannot be passed on. As we see with Raphie, this mutation can lead to patches of different coat colors in dogs.
Raphie Is a Show Cocker Spaniel
There are two types of Cocker Spaniel: working and show. As the name implies, working Cocker Spaniels are active and love to have a job. They are leaner and more energetic than the show type, and easily trainable.

Ralphie is a show Cocker Spaniel, meaning his line was developed by breeders to meet specific standards of dog shows and kennel clubs. These dogs are also muscular with a compact body, a more pronounced ribcage and short loins.
Show Cocker Spaniels have unique head features that include a rounded skull with short and square muzzles. They are required by shows to have long ears at the same level as their eyes.
Ralphie lives up to his breed name — he’s definitely a showstopper!
