If you are a dog parent, you’ve likely noticed your dog smile. Or at least give that goofy look where they open up their mouth and the corners of the mouth raise into what looks like a smile. And it almost always seems to happen when they should be smiling. Like when they’re looking at you, asking for a treat, or just in a position when they’re super content.
We recently came across a TikTok video that shows at least some dogs know how to smile and love doing so. It came from TikTok user @life.with.a.landcloud and features Boomer, a Samoyed dog. The video is only 10 seconds long, but it has all the proof we need to believe our furry friends love to smile.

Boomer, the Smiliest Samoyed Dog
The video’s first caption on the actual footage reads, “Dogs can’t smile.” And then the caption on the side of the video above the comments section responds, “Clearly whoever said this hasn’t met Boomer.” The video starts with a clip of Boomer resting his head on his human parent, Charisma’s shoulder. Charisma says smile, starts to smile, and Boomer follows, giving the biggest smile. Then there is a five-second montage of Boomer smiling in various places, like on a boat and in a bed. That’s it! But, hey, that’s all we need to believe further in something that we really want to believe.

There are a few comments on the video from other TikTok users that we love. One has a picture of the other TikTok user’s dog, also smiling, and reads, “My puppa knows how to smile too.” And then TikTok user @emma comments, “Ma’am, are you aware that you have a sweet and adorable polar bear?”
“Please give him a little boop on the nose for me,” commented TikTok user @chloweezy. And TikTok user @portiamonty added, “Sammies are known for their beautiful smiles.”
While dogs definitely appear to smile, it’s not for the same reasons as humans. But it generally reflects their current emotional state, typically one of comfort or relaxation with their surroundings. Meaning, dogs don’t give that smiley face unless they feel comfortable, loved and relaxed. So while it might not mean they think something is funny or are being outwardly friendly, it does mean they are relaxed and comfortable with their current environment.
